Better known as the left wing of the U.S. Congress:
Barack Obama proposed legislation titled Global Poverty Act (S. 2433) and was approved by the Committee, on which Joe Biden was on.
The bill suggests we spend .7% of our GDP - .7% of 13.8 Trillion is just under $100 billion EACH YEAR! - on helping people around the world that live on less than 1 dollar a day. Coincidentally that does not include impoverished people living in the United States....
So, not only has our president-elect expressed a strong compunction to spread the wealth across the country, but now he has taken it worldwide. Even in the best economic time, I find this somewhat offensive when we have so many people in America currently at poverty levels. Our nation is already borrowing and printing money at astronomical rates, this just really bakes the cake.
Check out the link to see what you can do about this. The author, Arkady of Indy Mind, includes the list of the five usual suspect "republicans" who have signed onto this piece of garbage. Hi Chuck, Olympia, etc.
Here's a less-awful idea that might actually help, if it were our job to fight global poverty. How about we spend this money fighting countries that refuse to enter the 18th century and democratize? Only one thing will significantly lessen the number of people in this world who live off a dollar a day or less: democracy.
OK, it's still an awful idea. But it was my first try, and I only thought about it for about 5 seconds, and it's waaaaay better than this idiotic Obama proposal. Any thoughts?
