How Far Has Journalism Sunk in America?

Journalism is so dead in America that Ace of Ace of Spades is being forced to offer $25,000 to any journalist willing to release newsworthy information to the public. In the past, wasn't this considered the duty of journalists? I've been out of journalism school for nearly four whole months now, so my memory is a little foggy. But I thought I remembered learning that.
