Several of the comments made in the article, and by people here have been childish and trivial. I myself am a Christian, and I do not believe its our duty to try to graft our believes and principles on to other, if so then the value of the choice is diminished if on doesn't make it for themselves for one thing. I also believe that L had several valid points that people aren't willing to address because it conflicts with their own ideals, or values, while he gave very clear and well supported information in his claims.

Lets face some realities. We invested a great deal in a war that was managed horribly, with the only real "gain" being the death of one dictator, at the cost of many lives, billions of dollars, and nearly a decade, as well as the ire of the international community.

It is too soon, to praise or criticize the actions of President Obama, as we haven't seen what the overall impact of his decisions will be. We can however praise or criticize the initiatives he wishes to implement based on their merits or lack of them, as well as his motives.

Its fruitless to criticize the morals, integrity, or character of anyone in the political arena, due to the nature of the beast itself. There are hard decisions people have to make, and what we can justify from a position of power, and what we believes has humans beings will be different from time to time, to think otherwise is naive and childish.

For example, the actions of Presidents, Wilson (via World War I) and Truman, (via World War II) can be brought into question. We can address that Wilson ran on the platform of "Win With Wilson We Won't Go To War", and we all know how that turned out, and the there was Truman's decision to attack Hiroshima and Nagasaki with Nukes, not to mention that actually bombing Kyoto was only just barely taken on the table, and that Japanese society may have never recovered from that one. Hiroshima and Nagasaki can not morally be justified, (civilian targets that ended in considerably more deaths than the attack of Pearl Harbor as military target) and Wilson went back on his major campaign promise/platform.

In hindsight both of these Presidents still acted in what they felt was the best interest of the American people, as has every (for the most part) every President who has served, including Clinton, Bush and Obama.

Clinton thought that building an America that would not need to rely on military force was the right thing for the country's economic stability and the right message to send to the world, their were many benefits to this but it made us vulnerable and caused us to have to rebuild our military strength during the Bush years. Bush felt that despite the platitudes regarding the maintaining of our civil liberties drastic action had to be taken to secure our borders, this prompted using whatever means were necessary including emergency executive powers, and even deception. Obama has tried to galvanize the country into and era of social and civil conscience, and attack the problems that have been plaguing America's infrastructure.

All of these things have conflicted with various people's and groups values at one point or another, and all of these individuals have committed an abuse of power at one point or another. And guess what, parents make mistakes, preachers sin, teachers lie, and everyone fails at one point another and falls short of the glory of God. Scale and stage don't change this and people need to be more empathetic in their view of anyone who bares the burden of leadership.

Nice piece of writing Scott. But I'm a little confused as to which God it is that teaches us to love? Is it the Islam God, the Evangelical God, the Protestant God?????? The way I see it, more wars have been fought for religion's sake than any other cause. The religions of the world teach more intolerance and distrust of each other than any secular philosophy that I know of. Lets see, here in America, isn't it the Evangelicals that call the Mormons and Catholics cultists, hate homosexuals, liberals, anything that is not Rebublican???? Please Scott explain in more detail exactly how your God teaches us to love and then please send your answer to all religious leaders. Cause I think they've missed the point somewhere along the line.

If the nation was convinced that there was a moral reason to be in Iraq, this administration would be more popular even with the war's mishandling. As it stands, the nation is so polarized that many would rather be on the side of their party rather than on the right side. Success in the surge? This war will be remembered as the Big Lie that no one wanted to admit was not true. The reason the war remains unpopular despite the "success of the surge" is two fold: wars are rarely popular; people understand that they were made a fool of by the government in deciding to wage this war in the first place (the Bush administration has had credibility issues ever since). How can there be people claiming success with a straight face after 105,000 people are dead without any real reason. We are supposed to thank them now? Thank you for curbing violence and saving face for the American people. But was Sadam's life worth the 105,000 (US and Iraqis) that were sacrificed to take it? Our troops can do anything provided the support and resources they need, but just because we can destroy an entity does not mean we should do so and that is the only reason we are in Iraq. People figured they could do it quick and send a messege to the terrorists. Truth is, if John McCain had his way this war would have been over much sooner and with less bloodshed. Sadly Bush lent his ear to Wolfy and the gang. The fact remains that even if it ended in a week, without preventing the proliferation of WMDs what are the American people left with? Destroying countries to recreate them in our own image? McCain stayed the course on the war because he was in the original chorous of liars who wanted us to go to war in the first place, it had nothing to do with his character. This administration and its party are a national embarrasment of never before seen proportions(Gonzales, Libby, Katrina, excessive Deregulation, Afghanistan, Iraq, Russia, North Korea, Iran, NATO credibility, US economic credibility, education, International economic decline, Ahbu Grahib, Guantanamo, civil rights, wire tapping, immigration, energy, national DEBT!). Someone's head has to roll. The people want blood even if it's innocent maverick blood.

Good news is on the horizon. With the election of the most liberal senator in Congress we can expect positive changes to the way Americans view one another. An organization called Unity House will soon be lobbying for the job of bringing the nation under one roof. Once approved and funded by Congress one million educators will spread out over the nation with the task of promoting tolerance for diverse lifestyles. This will be done by the knocking on every door by groups of socially diversified educators. They will be spreading the word that we are all brothers and sisters that must learn to love one another. Each group will be made up of five educators. They will come from racially mixed and diverse backgrounds with a variety of mindsets with no lifestyle excluded. Another task this group will have is to find out if there is enough room available to accommodate a homeless person. If there is---free transportation with a food and clothing allowance will add another member to the family. Our nation has gone through years of civil unrest but it has finally coming to an end by having Americans tolerating, sharing and living together under one roof.
