Conservatism Today: We confine our worship to God. And despite what the mainstream media have been telling us, Obama is not God.
Barack Obama's fans remind me of Ron Paul supporters. Paul's nutty followers were so annoying that they turned most people off from taking Paul seriously, but it's become clear that having wacky followers is a benefit if you're a Democrat. Unlike Paul's supporters, many worshipers of the Obamessiah carry press passes. Some even have their own television shows. Others are famous.
On a side note, have you ever realized how many truly nutty people make truckloads of money in this country? If you have any suggestions on why this might be, I'd like to read 'em in the comments. I think a large portion of the reason for this is that liberals are still allowed to choose how to spend their own money. But their representatives in government are working on changing that fact.
Back on point, I'm sure you remember Chris Matthews of Hardball saying:
"I've been following politics since I was about 5," said Mr. Matthews. "I've never seen anything like this. This is bigger than Kennedy. [Obama] comes along, and he seems to have the answers. This is the New Testament.
And this:
(I)t’s part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama’s speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don’t have that too often. No, seriously. It’s a dramatic event. He speaks about America in a way that has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the feeling we have about our country.
As Jonah Goldberg pointed out yesterday, Star Wars creator George Lucas thinks it's "reasonably obvious" that Obama is a Jedi Knight, which I'm assuming is pretty god-like in Lucas' world.
Then there's Deepak Chopra. My wife once convinced me to read one of his books (I think she drugged me) and it took me at least three years to fully recover spiritually. In case you haven't heard of Chopra, he's one of those charlatans who is always finding new gods and new ways to connect to these gods, all of which seem to result in bestselling books for himself, while ignoring the one true God. He avoids the "Obama is God" route, presumably because he hasn't figured out how to profit from it, and instead goes with "Obama is America":
In essence Sen. Obama's speech said, "I am America," and amazingly enough, people from all walks of life, political persuasions, faiths, and ethnic backgrounds believe him. It's an audacious rallying cry. Obama made himself both lighthouse and lightning rod. (I imagine some part of himself quakes to think on what he's done.) Watching cynical reporters and political commentators believe in him almost instantaneously is breathtaking. There was no guarantee that the tide would turn. The climate of division has been long and deep-seated...
If we are lucky, we will wake up and begin the journey back to self-awareness as a people...If Barack Obama makes it all the way to the White House, it will represent a quantum leap in American consciousness...
What a load of hooey. How's that for intelligent analysis? I don't care, it doesn't merit intelligent analysis. What I'd like to see in America is more "self-awareness" and "consciousness" of the issues, of basic economics and of common sense.
Conservatives are sometimes accused of worshiping Ronald Reagan in a similar manner. I have the utmost love and respect for Reagan. I have a Reagan Library in my home, a bookshelf devoted to books about him. There is no worship involved. But the point liberals miss is that the love and respect that conservatives have for Reagan is based on his accomplishments plus his ideas. It is not based on swooning over his words.
Reagan spoke about big ideas of individual freedom, not vague talk of hope and change. More importantly, he would have ridiculed any supporter of his acting like Obama's do. His message was that you don't look to government to solve your problems, you ask it to stop causing you new ones. Obama's message is "look to me to solve your problems," which explains why his followers worship him. As he said last month:
I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.
Yes, his very words, to the weak-minded thinker, lead to this behavior.
Back to accomplishments. A true Messiah, like oh, say Jesus, was known by what he did. None of us would have ever read his words unless they had been backed up by the signs, wonders, miracles and the resulting movement. It wasn't just words.
Obama is not qualified, based on his accomplishments and known judgment ability, to run a McDonald's restaurant. His followers want him to run all our lives.
