GB - Favre Expected To Ask To Be Taken Off Reserved/Retired List?
Source: Peter King, SI.com
SI.com's Peter King writes that he fully expects Favre's agent to send a letter to the Packers within the next 10 days, stating that Favre, 38, wants to be taken off the National Football League's reserve/retired list. At that point, the team will have no choice but to re-admit the league's most accomplished statistical quarterback ever back to football, and general manager Ted Thompson and McCarthy will have a decision to make that you can be sure is keeping them up nights. They can take Favre and his $12.8-million cap number back onto the team and give him his starting job back, they can trade him or they can release him.

This makes sense to me and it's what I've been saying the last few days. Favre holds the cards here. He can push this by asking to come back to the Packers which would force Ted Thompson into some uncomfortable decisions.
The clear cut obvious decision in my opinion is for the Packers to welcome him back. That's not optimal for Thompson but it's much more attractive than trading Favre or allowing his release so that he could wind up in Minnesota. As King points out, can you imagine the story it would be if Brett Favre were the starting QB for the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 on Monday Night at Lambeau Field on the night that the Packers were supposed to be retiring Favre's jersey? If that were a movie, you wouldn't believe it. Your guess is as good as mine but my gut feel is that Favre will unretire and force the Packers to do something. Whether they allow him to come back or not depends on how much pride they're willing to swallow and how good they want to be in 2008.
